It’s the basic game, the one that men have been playing in the comfort of their own homes, with their friends, ever since this game has been invented. For many of us, a guy’s only night means meeting with the friends, playing poker on small stakes and just enjoying the game, with a beer in one hand, and the cards in the other.

The poker game that is usually enjoyed at home is Texas Hold’Em, a very popular game for the average poker player, not just in tournaments. Poker doesn’t always have to be high stakes. When you’re playing at home, what you want to see is people having fun, competing against each other, but not ruining their lives because of it. Poker can be relaxing in such scenarios and this is the way it should be when it’s played at home.

One very good example of a poker network that has over 30 poker rooms is Prima Poker Network. There are quite a few others though.

A couple of examples of poker networks that are well known include iPoker, PartyGaming, Boss Media, 24hPoker and On Game. A poker network doesn’t have to be limited to just poker though. It could just as well be offering online casino games and bingo rooms.

Hey guys. Today I’m starting a new series of articles here on iPokerBlog.com, called Term of the Day (TOD – catchy isn’t it?). The first term that I’m going to talk about is Bad Beat Jackpot.

This kind of jackpot is awarded by the room where the poker game takes place, in situations when a very nice hand ends up losing to a hand that is even better. An example would be a case when the first player has KK, the second one having AA, with community cards being AAKKQ. Both players would end up having four of a kind, but the one with Aces would be the winner. This would be a very good example of a situation where Bad Beat Jackpot would come in play.

The kind of payout you can expect in this situation is a split, with 50% going to the player that lost, 25% going to the winner, and the rest going to other players at the table that participated in that hand. The payout levels and the cases when they are awarded differ with each poker room though.

Poker as everyone knows it is almost 200 years old. The online version, however, is much more recent. The last few years experienced a real boom of the online poker which definitively marked this game.

Before an online poker room was first launched, there were other sites for online gambling. At the middle of the 90s the online sportsbook was very popular, as well as the online casinos. In 1994 the first online casino became operational and it was developed by a major software supplier specialized in online casinos, called Microgaming.

The first poker room in the virtual world was established in 1998. At that time Planet Poker was the only firm of online poker. This didn’t last long, though. Planet Poker was overtaken in the online space by numerous other poker rooms. Since then, the industry changed drastically, but the rake structure stayed pretty much the same.

In 1999 Paradise Poker entered the online space and it took the lead of the industry. Because there was all at the beginning, infamous practices found a good terrain to occur. Such was the case of Poker Spot. Dutch Boyd, the successful poker player, founded Poker Spot.

It was in May 2000 when it was launched. By September it already occupied the first rank among the online poker room which offered tournaments. This also left room for trouble. The deposits made by the players were unable to be collected by Dutch Boyd’s company from the firm which processed the credit card. Therefore, the system did not recognize the deposits made by the players, so the winners could not collect their money. This marked the beginning of Poker Spot’s end.

Since then, no other incident similar to Poker Spot occurred. E-cash emergence changed things a lot. The dominant service for transferring funds in the online poker industry is Neteller. It works not only for online poker firms, but also for users. Thus, users are allowed to deposit money through Neteller at an online poker room and there is no need for wire transfer or credit card. Withdrawals are also received quicker through Neteller. By using Neteller, fraud is avoided and this is why online poker rooms prefer it, modest fees being another reason.

In 2001 the online poker industry welcomed two other dominant firms: Poker Stars and Party Poker, the first becoming very popular for its tournaments.

The industry grew more and more based on the increasing popularity of online poker playing. Paradise still leaded the poker industry until 2003. After 2003 it was overtaken by Party Poker which started advertising its services on TV. Advertising during World Poker Tour was a very good move, along with the campaign of Party Poker Million. Soon the Party Poker network reached the top. Nowadays Party Poker is almost half of the online poker market.

Still, the best advertising the poker industry could get was not the million dollar marketing of Party Poker, but a Cinderella story of a man, called Chris Moneymaker, who bought in with 40 dollars and won the Poker World Series. This really put the online poker industry on the world’s map.

Poker Stars was the network Moneymaker used to sign in for the main event of the Poker World Series. At this major event, Moneymaker pitted heads against professional poker players, among the best in the world. He managed to win 2.5 million dollars at his first taking part into a live tournament.

A look at the poker skills one needs to have in order to succeed when playing poker. From math to discipline and psychology, we cover it all.

Those known in the poker world as poker sharks are usually considered aggressive and tight people. They seem very determined and sure of what they are doing and they only do it once or twice, but they do it well.

This general description is pretty real, but doesn’t say much of what stands behind that attitude. There are certain skills a poker player should develop in order to become a poker shark.

Skill #1: Mathematics

Professional players are always aware of the game’s general probabilities. What they know, for example, is that if holding the pocket pair, then chances to hit a set are 1 in 8.5.

Outs are taken seriously by any good player. They refer to the cards that should improve a hand. To calculate your shot for a hitting in percents, you just count your outs, then you multiply that number by two, after which you add one.

Skill #2: Discipline

To be a good poker player means a lot more than just to know how to play poker. Good poker players set their minds to winning. Those casual players just like to take a try, no matter the game: roulette, slots, etc. They just try and try until they get lucky. Poker players don’t wait for luck, but for other to run out of luck.

Discipline means to know when it is time to quit. A good poker player can tell when the game is worth to continue. Disciplined players are aware of their imperfection. They learn from their mistakes and don’t blame others for that.

Skill #3: Psychology

Self centered players don’t make good poker players. A poker player may be the most selfish men in the world in his everyday life, but in a poker room he becomes empathic with the opponents. It is vital to think like them and understand them when they make decisions and the reasons behind those decisions.

No limit games depend more on psychology than limit games. The latter resume more to mathematics, while the first are more of psychological battles.

Skill #4: Risk vs. reward understanding

A high enough reward attracts long-shot risks and demanding advantages and pot odds fall into this risk vs. reward thing. A more risk-averse attitude with the overall bankroll is preferred to one with the stack at table. An individual poker game requires much more attention to each chip at the table. Correct plays are the only things you should have in mind.

Aussie Millions decided to do just that and a few days ago made the announcement that the Super High Roller Event will have a $250,000 buy-in, the largest in the history of poker.

A total of twenty people showed up with this buy-in, so the top 3 players received a pay, with the first one getting $2.5 million. Some of the players included Erik Sidel, Annette Obrestad, David Benyamine, Chris Ferguson, John Juanda and Phil Ivey.

The top 3 players that finished in the money were Benyamine (3rd with $1 million), Trickett (2nd with $1.4 million) and Seidel was the winner of the $2.5 million prize.

This league will have professional players in it and it will have certain guidelines that need to be followed in order for the players to keep their card. These cards will be given for periods of 2,3 or 5 years. There will also be less than 10 memberships with lifetime periods on them. People like Doyle Brunson will receive these.

Jeffrey Pollack is the co-founder of the Federated Sports and Gambling company, which will organize this league. He will also be the chairman of this league. Two hundred players will get invites to take part in this league, with the invites being given based on formulas which consider money earned, major live events finishes and history in tournaments.

We already know that Isildur1 is actually Viktor Blom, as he revealed himself at Pokerstars Caribbean Adventure. Some people think that he didn’t want to come forward because of the tax laws of Sweden. The newspapers say that he might get a $150 million tax, because poker players from this country have to pay 30% tax on winnings from online gambling, from sites that don’t have their HQ in EU.

This huge number comes from the fact that the law places the tax on each pot that is played, and it doesn’t matter if you won or lost. That’s how you can get such a ridiculous tax amount. Because Blom currently lives in the UK, he can sit relaxed now, since this country doesn’t tax gambling income.
